Report: Suns waive Ulis to continue clearing cap space

Jennifer Stewart / USA TODAY Sports

The Phoenix Suns have waived point guard Tyler Ulis, as the team continues to open up more salary cap space, league sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Ulis was set to make $1.5 million on a non-guaranteed deal next season.

The 5-foot-10 former Kentucky Wildcat had a strong season in the Suns' rotation last season and was moved to the starter position for the second half of the year.

Ulis averaged 7.8 points and 4.4 assists and shot 83.2 percent at the free-throw line in 71 games.

With Brandon Knight still on the books for $14.6 million and the team not expected to re-sign Elfrid Payton, the waiving of Ulis signifies the Suns moving in a different direction at the point guard spot for next season.
