Hayward has surgery to remove screws, plate; expected back for camp
Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward underwent successful surgery on Wednesday to remove a plate and screws he had implanted to repair his broken fibula, the team announced.
He'll be allowed to return to basketball activity in approximately six-to-eight weeks and is expected to be at full strength for the start of training camp.
The plate and screws were causing irritation of his peroneal tendons but there doesn't appear to be any structural issues with his ankle and fibula.
Hayward was Boston's big offseason signing last summer, inking a four-year max contract worth $128 million, reuniting with his former head coach at Butler, Brad Stevens, in the process.
It was just minutes into the season opener against the Cleveland Cavaliers when the now 28-year-old All-Star suffered his injury, a result of an awkward landing following a midair collision with LeBron James and Jae Crowder.
He averaged 21.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 3.5 assists on 47.1 percent shooting during his final year with the Utah Jazz in 2016-17.
