Report: Tigers unsure about drafting Casey Mize with No. 1 pick
The Detroit Tigers own the first overall pick in the upcoming 2018 draft on June 4, but they might be thinking differently from everyone else when it comes to how they're going to use it.
MLB scouts are telling Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports that this year's draft is the most wide-open it has been in recent memory, with the Tigers waffling about taking Auburn pitcher Casey Mize with the No. 1 selection.
The Tigers are instead considering Georgia Tech catcher Joey Bart, Nightengale adds.
Mize, a 21-year-old right-hander, is the consensus No. 1 overall selection on most draft boards, including on MLB.com, which describes him as having the "best combination of stuff and control among college pitchers in the 2018 draft."
Bart, who's ranked at No. 9 by MLB.com, is a 21-year-old junior with a lot of power, and is the top college catcher available in the draft.
The last time the Tigers had the No. 1 overall selection, in 1997, they chose Rice University right-hander Matt Anderson, who made 257 appearances in the majors during a seven-year career. He never started a game.
