Ruben Semedo was suspended without pay by Villarreal on Friday after he was denied bail for multiple charges including attempted murder.

The 23-year-old is accused of involvement with others in holding a man who they threatened with a gun, according to Reuters. The other accusations levelled at the former Portugal Under-21 representative are for robbery, assault, illegal detention, and possession of illegal weapons.

He was arrested Tuesday and refused bail by the court of Lliria two days later.

Villarreal paid Sporting CP €14 million for Semedo last June after he impressed in 24 Primeira Liga appearances in the previous term. Injuries have restricted Semedo to only three La Liga starts this campaign, with his last outing coming when he was withdrawn 48 minutes into December's 2-0 home loss to Barcelona.

"The alleged kidnapping did not take place. It's a total lie that there was a kidnapping and torture," Semedo's agent Catio Balde said after his client was detained. "The gun didn't belong to Semedo even though they found it in his house."
