Ozil, Ramsey out of Ostersund 2nd leg as League Cup final looms

Arsene Wenger says he will spare Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey from Thursday's second leg against Ostersund in the Europa League round of 32.

The Arsenal manager will undoubtedly have an eye on Sunday's League Cup final against Manchester City when picking his lineup against the Swedish minnow. The continental tie would appear to be a formality, with Wenger's side carrying a 3-0 advantage from last Thursday's first meeting at the Jamtkraft Arena.

"We'll see how his evolution goes now from today until Sunday. I don't rule him out (of the League Cup final) yet," Wenger said of Ramsey, who is dealing with a groin complaint. "It depends on how well he can improve with the intensity of training until Sunday."

Unlike Ramsey, an absentee from Arsenal's last two matches, Ozil has featured in the club's previous six games. However, the German was bed-ridden Monday and Tuesday with an illness, and Wenger doesn't want to risk his midfielder while there's a chance of plundering silverware this weekend.

"I would certainly have played him, but because he was sick he will have to work hard tomorrow and will not be involved," Wenger told Reuters.

Ozil was assisted by Henrikh Mkhitaryan for the third goal in the first-leg ease past Ostersund, and the Armenian will likely be the creative fulcrum in the return meeting at the Emirates Stadium.
