The New York Mets optioned right-hander Kodai Senga to Triple-A Syracuse, the team announced Friday.

New York recalled catcher Francisco Alvarez, brought up right-hander Wander Suero, and optioned backstop Hayden Senger in corresponding moves.

Senga has struggled since the All-Star break after pitching well in the first half of the season. The 32-year-old owns a 6.56 ERA and 1.71 WHIP with 22 walks and eight home runs allowed in his last eight starts.

Per his contract, the Mets needed Senga's consent to send him to the minors. Rookie Brandon Sproat is reportedly set to take Senga's turn in the rotation Sunday against the Cincinnati Reds.

Senga's relationship with the Mets remains in good shape, and his demotion is expected to last about two starts, depending on how he performs in the minors, sources told SNY's Andy Martino.

Alvarez returns to the Mets after missing two and a half weeks with a sprained thumb ligament, which he injured shortly after coming back from a broken pinky finger.

The 23-year-old owns a .787 OPS with seven home runs and 24 RBIs in 56 games this season.
