San Diego Padres right-hander Robert Suarez was suspended three games and received an undisclosed fine for hitting Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani with a pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning of Thursday's game at Dodger Stadium, MLB announced.

Suarez's suspension was set to begin on Friday, but the pitcher elected to appeal the decision after claiming the hit-by-pitch wasn't intentional.

"It wasn't intentional," Suarez said through a translator, according to MLB.com's AJ Cassavell.

"That decision was made by the umpires. I knew there was a warning issued to both clubs. But I obviously wasn't trying to hit him in that situation."

Padres manager Mike Shildt and Dodgers skipper Dave Roberts were also suspended one game apiece for their roles in Thursday's benches-clearing fracas. Both managers were ejected after they stormed the field when Fernando Tatis Jr. was hit by a pitch.

The two skippers will serve their suspensions on Friday.
