The New York Knicks are expected to request permission to interview Dallas Mavericks bench boss Jason Kidd for their head coaching vacancy, sources told NBA insider Marc Stein.

The Knicks parted ways with Tom Thibodeau on Tuesday after their first Eastern Conference finals appearance in 25 years. New York reportedly believes a new voice will serve as the focus for the organization's next step of winning a championship.

New York has yet to officially request to speak to Kidd, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania and Tim MacMahon. Kidd has two years remaining on the contract extension he signed with the Mavs in 2024.

Dallas general manager Nico Harrison and governor Patrick Dumont haven't discussed if they would be willing to grant permission for Kidd to speak to the Knicks, Charania and MacMahon added.

Kidd has been the Mavs' coach since 2021-22, during which time he's collected a 179-149 record and guided the franchise to the playoffs twice, including an NBA Finals appearance last season.

The 10-time All-Star also previously coached the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks, and he was an assistant with the Los Angeles Lakers from 2019-21, winning an NBA title with them in 2020.

The Mavs stole all the headlines this season when they traded Luka Doncic to the Lakers for Anthony Davis, a move that Kidd wasn't informed of until it was finalized. A number of injuries then derailed Dallas' season, leading to the franchise missing the postseason.

The Mavericks won the NBA draft lottery and are expected to select Duke phenom Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick.
