Mahomes becomes Chiefs' all-time passing leader

Patrick Mahomes rewrote more Kansas City Chiefs history during Thursday's 27-20 victory over the Baltimore Ravens, replacing Len Dawson as the franchise's all-time leader in passing yards.

Mahomes entered the season opener only 83 yards behind Dawson, who passed for 28,507 yards in 183 career appearances with Kansas City. Mahomes broke that mark in his 97th regular-season game.

It happened on a play in which the Chiefs superstar avoided a sack to extend a third-and-12 situation and completed a spectacular 23-yard pass to his favorite target, tight end Travis Kelce.

The promising Chiefs drive didn't end with a touchdown, as the reigning Super Bowl champions had to settle for a 31-yard field goal.

It's a matter of when, not if, Mahomes also becomes the Chiefs' all-time leader in touchdown passes. The 28-year-old entered Thursday's game with 219 career TD throws, second in franchise history to Dawson's 237.

Mahomes has been magnificent since becoming Kansas City's starter in 2018. The 2017 first-round pick has claimed two NFL MVP awards while leading the Chiefs to three Super Bowl titles. He's also been named Super Bowl MVP three times.
