American Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone demolished the field to win gold in the 400m hurdles Thursday, defending her title from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and setting a world record in the process.

Anna Cockrell of the U.S. won silver, and Femke Bol of the Netherlands took bronze.

McLaughlin-Levrone is the first back-to-back women's 400m hurdles champion in the event's history. Her time of 50.37 seconds bested her world record of 50.65 seconds, which she set at the U.S. track and field Olympic trials in June. She has six of the top 10 times ever recorded in women's 400m hurdles.

This is the 25-year-old American's third Olympics. She now has three gold medals, including one from the 4x400m relay in Tokyo.
