Jeff Luhnow's wife blames Astros' struggles on his firing: 'Karma sucks'

Gina Luhnow, the wife of former Houston Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow, took a huge swipe at the club and owner Jim Crane during an exchange with fans on X on Thursday.

In response to a tweet that questioned how the team managed to fall on hard times after its near-decade run of dominance, Gina put the blame squarely on Crane for firing her husband.

Jeff rebuilt the Astros into a powerhouse during his eight-season run as their GM and was the architect of their 2017 World Series championship club. However, he was fired in January 2020 on the heels of receiving a one-year suspension from MLB for his lack of action regarding the team's illegal sign-stealing in 2017.

The Astros' success continued after Luhnow left the club, as they made the ALCS in each of the next five seasons while winning two more AL pennants and a second World Series title in 2022 under the watch of James Click.

This year has been a different story, though, as Houston sits seven games under .500 and 8 1/2 games out of first place. Multiple key players have missed time due to injuries, while stars Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman, and José Abreu have been struggling for most of the year. The Astros' farm system is also considered one of the worst in baseball, a fact not lost on Gina:

In November 2020, Jeff sued the Astros for breach of contract, alleging that he was fired as a "scapegoat" for the scandal. The lawsuit was dismissed several months later after the two sides "resolved their differences."

Luhnow hasn't attempted to return to baseball since his suspension expired, instead moving into the world of soccer. The 58-year-old is now the owner of two professional clubs: Mexico's Cancun FC, and Spanish second-division champions Leganes.

Click, Luhnow's replacement, left the Astros shortly after their 2022 championship win following a contract dispute with Crane.
