The Pittsburgh Steelers aren't picking up the fifth-year option on the rookie contract for running back Najee Harris, sources told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Gerry Dulac and Ray Fittipaldo.

The 26-year-old Harris will become a free agent following the 2024 season.

The Steelers are taking a wait-and-see approach ahead of Harris' first year under new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith before they commit to the productive tailback, sources told the Post-Gazette.

Pittsburgh has employed a balanced approach to its rushing attack over the past couple of seasons, splitting carries between Harris and Jaylen Warren. The pair played a large role in the Steelers finishing 13th in the league with 2,010 rushing yards in 2023.

With Harris' contract set to come off the books after next season, the Steelers will save $6.79 million in 2025 salary-cap space, according to Spotrac.

Pittsburgh also declined to exercise the option on quarterback Justin Fields' rookie contract prior to Thursday's deadline. The Steelers have not picked up the option on a first-round selection's deal since T.J. Watt in 2020.

Harris led the team with 1,205 scrimmage yards to go along with eight total touchdowns last season. The 2021 first-round tailback has rushed for 3,269 yards and 22 touchdowns since entering the league. He's the only halfback in franchise history to rush for 1,000 yards in first three seasons.
