Garcia shuts down Haney rematch: I won 'fair and square'
Ryan Garcia appears to be having second thoughts about a rematch with Devin Haney.
Garcia tweeted Wednesday night - in the wake of a failed drug test that has shaken up the boxing world - he is no longer interested in fighting Haney for a second time.
Nah I ain’t going to rematch him
— RYAN GARCIA (@RyanGarcia) May 2, 2024
I beat him easy, fair and square
I’d be damned if I rematch him
Garcia pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the year in his April 20 bout with Haney in Brooklyn, dropping the WBC junior welterweight champion three times en route to a majority-decision victory. Haney did not lose his title as Garcia missed weight for the match by 3.2 pounds.
Both Garcia and Haney expressed interest in a rematch during their in-ring interviews after the fight.
Garcia tested positive for Ostarine in two drug tests related to the Haney fight, both administered by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association on April 19 and April 20. The news of Garcia's positive tests broke Wednesday.
Garcia denied taking banned substances in a video on X, saying he wouldn't "even know where to get steroids."
The 25-year-old star began a new winning streak with the surprise triumph over Haney. Garcia suffered his first career loss to Gervonta "Tank" Davis via knockout in April 2023 but rebounded late last year with a stoppage of Oscar Duarte.
