The Toronto Blue Jays and veteran infielder Eduardo Escobar agreed to a minor-league contract, the club announced Friday.

The addition of Escobar gives the Blue Jays another option to play third base or second base - two positions without definitive starters.

Toronto's other options include Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Cavan Biggio, Santiago Espinal, and Davis Schneider after Matt Chapman and Whit Merrifield departed via free agency.

Escobar posted one of the worst seasons of his 13-year career during his age-34 campaign last year. He slashed .226/.269/.344 with six homers and 31 RBIs over a combined 99 games between the New York Mets and Los Angeles Angels.

However, he was solid in 2021-22, which included an All-Star berth two years ago after going deep 28 times with 90 RBIs and a .786 OPS across 146 contests with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Milwaukee Brewers.
