Garry takes next step with dominant win over Magny
Ian Machado Garry continued his rise in the UFC welterweight division with a big victory Saturday night.
The up-and-coming Irishman defeated Neil Magny via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-26, 30-24) at UFC 292 in Boston.
Garry dominated Magny from pillar to post. He dropped Magny with a low kick early in the fight, and that became a trend throughout the matchup. Garry battered Magny's lead leg with kick after kick, and Magny could barely stand upright by the end of the fight.
"That guy has fought some of the best in the welterweight division, that was his 39th fight, and I made it look like he's never fought in the Octagon before," Garry said in his postfight interview.
Garry nearly got Magny out of there late in the third round, rocking him with a high kick and then following up with ground-and-pound. But Magny held on to reach the judges' scorecards.
Magny stepped up to face Garry on nine days' notice, replacing Geoff Neal. Garry and Magny traded verbal jabs at the prefight press conference Thursday. The animosity continued in the fight, with Garry flipping Magny the bird between rounds.
Garry, nicknamed "The Future," could find himself in the top 10 of the 170-pound rankings next week. He was No. 13 going into the fight, while Magny was No. 11.
After the fight, Garry said he wants to face former title challenger Stephen Thompson in a five-round main event next.
"To be the best striker in the world, you have to beat the best strikers," Garry said. "Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson is at the top of that list."
With the victory, Garry improves to 6-0 in the UFC; this was his third decision in six wins. The 25-year-old was coming off a first-round TKO of Daniel Rodriguez in May.
Magny has alternated wins and losses in his last six outings. He was coming off a victory over Phil Rowe in June. Magny, 36, owns the most wins in UFC welterweight history (21).
