Report: Twins in contact with Story, discussed starters with A's
Despite completing three major trades since the work stoppage ended, it looks like the Minnesota Twins aren't done yet.
Minnesota has been in touch with free-agent shortstop Trevor Story, a source told The Athletic's Dan Hayes.
The news comes after the Twins dealt Isiah Kiner-Falefa, whom they acquired from the Texas Rangers on Saturday, to the New York Yankees on Sunday.
Story is not only one of the top shortstops in free agency, but he's also one of the best players available.
The 29-year-old fashioned a .272/.340/.523 slash line with 158 home runs, 450 RBIs, and 100 steals in six seasons with the Colorado Rockies, which included two All-Star Game appearances. He's also a terrific defender, having amassed 69 defensive runs saved during his career.
However, the Texas native is coming off a tough campaign where he posted the second-lowest OPS and wRC+ of his career, although he was still worth 3.5 fWAR.
If the Twins fail to land Story, they could turn to one of Jorge Polanco, Gio Urshela, or Luis Arraez at short.
Minnesota got very little production out of the shortstop position in 2021, with Andrelton Simmons getting most of the reps.
In addition to Story, the Twins have also talked to the Athletics in recent days about trading for an Oakland starting pitcher, sources told MLB.com's Jon Morosi.
The Twins are reportedly most likely to land Sean Manaea or Frankie Montas if a deal happens.
