The Detroit Tigers re-signed second baseman Jonathan Schoop to a one-year contract on Friday.

The deal is worth $4.5 million, sources told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

To make room for Schoop on the 40-man roster, Detroit designated outfielder Travis Demeritte for assignment, according to MLive's Evan Woodberry.

Schoop originally joined the Tigers in free agency last winter and gave them a solid 2020 campaign at the keystone. He slashed .278/.324/.475 with eight home runs and 23 RBIs over 44 games and was named an AL Gold Glove finalist.

Despite having fewer plate appearances than most of his competition, Schoop's 1.4 WAR was tied for fifth among second basemen last year, per FanGraphs.

Schoop may play more than just second base in 2021. The 29-year-old said he's already spoken to new Tigers manager AJ Hinch about allowing him to showcase his versatility more, according to Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic. He's primarily played second in the majors but has made a handful of appearances at both shortstop and third base.

The Curacao native is a lifetime .259/.297/.450 hitter with 141 homers and 415 RBIs over parts of eight big-league seasons with four teams. Schoop's best year came in 2017 when he earned an All-Star berth and finished 12th in AL MVP voting.
