Wake Forest star wide receiver Sage Surratt will forgo the 2020 season due to the coronavirus pandemic and begin his preparation for the upcoming NFL draft, he announced Wednesday.

Surratt wrote that he decided to sit out of the season "due to the many uncertainties and risks associated with COVID-19."

Despite missing four games due to injury, Surratt broke out as a sophomore last season. The first-team All-ACC selection racked up 66 receptions for 1,001 yards and 11 touchdowns through nine appearances.

Overall, Surratt recorded 1,582 yards and 15 touchdowns on 107 catches in two seasons at Wake Forest. He's considered one of the best prospects at wide receiver in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Multiple other highly touted wide receivers have also opted out of the 2020 collegiate season due to COVID-19 concerns, including Minnesota's Rashod Bateman and Purdue's Rondale Moore.

The ACC is one of three conferences still planning to play football in the fall, along with the SEC and Big 12. The conference's 10-game, pandemic-adjusted schedule is set to begin in the second week of September.
