The Chicago Cubs and free-agent second baseman Jason Kipnis have agreed to a minor-league contract, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network.

The two-time All-Star will get $1 million plus incentives if he cracks the major-league roster, Heyman reports.

Kipnis was born in Northbrook, Illinois, and attended high school in the suburbs of Chicago.

The 32-year-old will likely compete with David Bote and prospect Nico Hoerner for playing time at second or a spot on the Cubs' bench.

Kipnis owns a .261/.333/.410 slash line with 123 home runs, 529 RBIs, and 252 doubles in 1,121 regular-season games over a nine-year career spent entirely with the Cleveland Indians. His best season came in 2013 when he finished 11th in AL MVP voting.

The Oakland Athletics were also rumored to be interested in the veteran's services.
