The Texas Rangers and free-agent catcher Robinson Chirinos are inching closer to a contract agreement, sources told Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News.

The two sides have maintained a consistent dialogue since the winter meetings, but the 35-year-old backstop recently went on vacation to Europe with his family, according to Grant.

Chirinos spent six years with the Rangers before joining the Houston Astros for the 2019 campaign. He slashed .238/.347/.443 with 17 home runs in 114 contests last season.

Texas currently has a glaring hole behind the plate. Jose Trevino, who owns a career .646 OPS in 43 major-league games, is projected to be the team's No. 1 backstop in 2020.

The Rangers have added right-handers Corey Kluber, Kyle Gibson, and Jordan Lyles so far this offseason, and the club is reportedly among the finalists to sign outfielder Nicholas Castellanos.
