Woods, Thomas, Hovland headline notables to miss U.S. Open cut
Tiger Woods, Justin Thomas, and Viktor Hovland headline a significant list of notable players who couldn't tame Pinehurst and will miss the cut at the U.S. Open.
Woods missed numerous birdie opportunities down the stretch that would have gotten him inside the 5-over number, but he instead missed by two shots after going 74-73. He's now missed the cut in his last two majors and hasn't played the weekend in a U.S. Open since 2019.
Tiger is going to miss the cut at Pinehurst. It'll be his 25th (24 on PGA Tour) worldwide miss in nearly 28 years as a pro. It's his 14th in a major and fifth in 23 U.S. Opens. For some perspective, Scottie Scheffler hasn't missed a cut since 2022 but has missed a total of 16…

Hovland missed the cut by one stroke after a dismal opening round put him behind the eight ball. The Norwegian made six bogeys and two doubles en route to an opening-round 78. He improved by 10 shots Friday with a 2-under 68 but will miss the cut at a major for the second time this season.
Thomas appeared to have righted the ship the past two months after crashing out of the Masters with a second-round 79. However, that progress was halted abruptly at Pinehurst with rounds of 77 and 74 to miss the cut by six shots. Thomas has now missed the cut at five of his last seven majors.
Other notable names to miss out include Max Homa, Jason Day, Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Will Zalatoris, and Phil Mickelson.
