Scottie Scheffler has been named the 2022 PGA TOUR Player of the Year, beating out Rory McIlroy and Cam Smith with 89% of the votes.

The award is voted on by PGA TOUR members who played in at least 15 events.

The World No. 1 won four tournaments this past season, including the 2022 Masters. Scheffler was also victorious at the WGC Match Play, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and the Phoenix Open - his first career PGA TOUR win.

The 26-year-old collected four runner-up finishes, 10 Top 5s, and 18 Top 25s in total through his 25 starts. He also finished fourth on TOUR in strokes gained: tee to green and strokes gained: approach the green.

Scheffler, who grew up in Dallas and is a University of Texas alumnus, was handed the award on ESPN's College GameDay ahead of the Longhorns' clash with Alabama on Saturday.

Scheffler has been on a meteoric rise to golf stardom. He was the Korn Ferry Tour Player of the Year in 2019 and the PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year in 2020. He's now the first player ever to win all three awards since their establishment in 1990.

"On behalf of the PGA TOUR, congratulations to Scottie on his remarkable season and his unprecedented achievements," TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan said. "Undoubtedly, one of the highest compliments a player can receive is the endorsement from his peers, and the fact that Scottie’s season was both dominant and consistent spoke volumes to the membership.

"And as gratifying as it has been to see his development on the course over the last several years, we are equally thankful that Scottie has embraced the role as an ambassador of the PGA TOUR and the game of golf. With young stars like Scottie leading the way, the PGA TOUR is in great hands for many years to come."
