McIlroy: I hate what LIV saga is doing to golf
Fresh off the heels of winning the third FedEx Cup title of his career, Rory McIlroy took aim at LIV Golf and how it's dividing the sport.
"I hate what it's doing to the game of golf. I hate it. I really do," McIlroy said, according to Golf Channel's Rex Hoggard. "Like it's going to be hard for me to stomach going to Wentworth in a couple of weeks' time and seeing 18 of them there. That just doesn't sit right with me.
"So yeah, I feel strongly. I believe what I'm saying are the right things, and I think when you believe that what you're saying (are) the right things, you're happy to stick your neck out on the line."
McIlroy and LIV Golf players Sergio Garcia, Abraham Ancer, Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood, Talor Gooch, and Patrick Reed are on the entry list for the BMW PGA Championship in England beginning on Sept. 8.
It's been a busy August for McIlroy, who shot a final-round 66 Sunday at East Lake Golf Club to capture the TOUR Championship by one stroke over Sungjae Im and Scottie Scheffler.
McIlroy and Tiger Woods were at the helm of a meeting that focused on strengthening the PGA TOUR's response to the emergence of LIV Golf earlier this month. On the eve of the TOUR Championship, commissioner Jay Monahan unveiled a series of sweeping changes that will be implemented in 2023, including increased purses and greater commitments from top players.
The Northern Irishman and Woods launched their own company, TMRW Sports, last week. The pair also announced the creation of TGL, a new tech-infused golf league in partnership with the PGA TOUR.
McIlroy's victory on Sunday was his third win of the season and the 22nd of his TOUR career.
