Report: Robert Garrigus becomes 1st player to request to play Saudi tournament
American Robert Garrigus has become the first player to request to play in a tournament on the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Invitational Series, according to Golfweek's Eamon Lynch.
The 44-year-old reportedly requested to play in the LIV Golf Invitational event starting June 9 at Centurion Golf Club in England. The PGA TOUR requires its players to submit a request 45 days prior to the first round of the tournament to compete, according to Lynch.
Garrigus, born in Idaho, first turned professional 25 years ago in 1997. He has one win on TOUR - the Children's Miracle Network Classic in 2010.
Last season, Garrigus split his time between the TOUR and the Korn Ferry Tour, playing in seven and 20 events, respectively. He finished the season ranked No. 224 on the FedEx Cup rankings.
This season, he's played in four events on TOUR. His tie for 16th at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February marked his highest finish.
The TOUR will decide on applications 30 days prior to the event, according to Lynch.
The plan for the league was released in mid-March. It is an eight-event series with events taking place from June 9 to Oct. 28 with a total purse of $250 million.
The event in June will offer a purse of $25 million.
