Americans carry 6-point lead to Sunday singles at Ryder Cup
The United States needs just 3.5 points in Sunday's singles matches to secure the Ryder Cup after finishing Saturday up 11-5 on the Europeans.
Europe grabbed the first two matches in the afternoon session, but the Americans were able to win the final two of the day to keep the six-point advantage from the morning.
Here are the full results from Saturday afternoon.
Match 1: Tyrrell Hatton/Shane Lowry 1-up over Harris English/Tony Finau
After sitting out the morning match for the second straight day, Lowry came out like a man possessed with three straight birdies to open the session. Hatton joined the party down the stretch by adding a clutch birdie of his own on No. 14 and a rock-solid par on the difficult par-3 17th. The stage was set for a dramatic finish, and Lowry supplied the ending by pouring in an incredible par putt to win the match. Lowry's brilliance will certainly raise some questions as to why captain Padraig Harrington sat him for both foursomes sessions.
Match 2: Jon Rahm/Sergio Garcia 2&1 over Jordan Spieth/Brooks Koepka
The blockbuster match of the afternoon certainly didn't disappoint, as Koepka and Spieth slugged it out against the star Spanish duo of Rahm and Garcia. As has been the case throughout the event, Rahm would simply not be denied, pouring in putt after putt to carry the duo. He finishes team play 3-0-1, making it clear he's the best player in the world. Garcia added to his all-time record with his 25th Ryder Cup victory.
Match 3: Scottie Scheffler/Bryson DeChambeau 3&1 over Tommy Fleetwood/Viktor Hovland
The third match was an incredible back-and-forth that was very tight throughout the afternoon. Fleetwood and Hovland held a 1-up lead heading to No. 14, but DeChambeau and Scheffler went bananas with birdies on four straight holes to win the match 3&1. Scheffler finished his first Ryder Cup team sessions with a 1-0-1 record, while Hovland led in all four of his matches over the first two days but somehow ended up with a 0-3-1 mark.
Match 4: Dustin Johnson/Collin Morikawa 4&3 over Ian Poulter/Rory McIlroy
Morikawa and Johnson stayed red-hot in the four-ball session while McIlroy and Poulter remained ice-cold, and the Americans grabbed yet another point with ease. Johnson finishes the team session with a remarkable 4-0 mark and Morikawa shone in his Ryder Cup debut with a 3-0 record. Poulter is now 1-5-1 in his last seven team sessions at the event. Meanwhile, McIlroy finishes team play 0-3 for the first time in his career.
