After finishing in a tie for fifth at the Travelers Championship on Sunday - a result he labeled as "average" - Brooks Koepka blamed his mental approach for his struggles at regular PGA TOUR events compared to major championships.

"I'm going to be flat-out honest - I can't focus," Koepka said, according to ASAP Sports. "A major, I get excited and I feel stuff on the first tee; I just struggle to do that in regular events."

Since his victory at the Phoenix Open in February, Koepka has missed three cuts and placed inside the top five on four occasions, two of those coming in majors. Of his eight career victories, half of them are major championships.

Despite his mediocre results in standard events, Koepka insists he's trying to win every time he tees it up.

"I'm not trying to finish second," he said. "It's just, I think the majors are easier to win if you're disciplined. Out here, I think there are a lot more guys that have the opportunity to win the way it sets up. Instead of having three (between the pin and the edge of the green), you've got five. So, you got a little more room for error, and I think that's why."

Koepka will take the next two weeks off in the lead-up to the Open Championship and won't touch a club for roughly 10 days. His best result at an Open was a tie for fourth in 2019.
