Jason Day fired a second-round 62 to take a one-shot lead at the Travelers Championship heading into the weekend.

The Aussie battled through back stiffness for the duration of the day to post his bogey-free score and put himself in a position to claim his first victory on the PGA TOUR since 2018.

"Yeah, body is okay. Just stiff," Day said after his round, according to ASAP Sports.

"It's sore to get onto the other side of the golf swing, so any time going left was a little bit sore. It is what it is. I haven't had time to really rest it since I kind of put it out. I think having a couple weeks off was great, but you just need a little bit more time, is what it is."

Day skipped final qualifying for last week's U.S. Open and, as a result, missed his first major since 2012.

The 33-year-old holds a one-shot lead over three-time Travelers champion Bubba Watson and Kramer Hickok.

Here's how the top of the leaderboard from TPC River Highlands sits after 36 holes:

Place Player To Par R2 Score
1 Jason Day -9 62
T2 Bubba Watson -8 66
T2 Kramer Hickok -8 69
T4 Russell Henley -7 66
T4 Kevin Kisner -7 63
T4 Seamus Power -7 67
T4 Justin Rose -7 63
T4 Kyoung Hun Lee -7 64
T4 Brice Garnett -7 68
T4 Troy Merritt -7 65

Patrick Cantlay and Scottie Scheffler climbed into the top 15 with rounds of 66 and 65, respectively.

Bryson DeChambeau (5-under), Patrick Reed (5-under), and Brooks Koepka (4-under) all comfortably made the 2-under cut.

Phil Mickelson birdied his final two holes to make the cut on the number. Dustin Johnson and Paul Casey also narrowly advanced to the weekend.
