Thomas: Spieth 'going to be fine' after shooting 76
After a brilliant start to his career, Jordan Spieth's game has fallen apart with a shocking plummet from No. 1 to No. 62 in the World Golf Ranking.
His good friend, Justin Thomas, has gone the opposite direction, rocketing up to the No. 1 spot after his win last week at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.
Thomas' 2-under 68 bested Spieth by 8 shots in their Round 3 pairing Saturday at the PGA Championship. Thomas, however, was quick to voice his support after witnessing the three-time major champion's struggles up close.
"I know he's going to be fine. I'm not just saying it because he's one of my best friends," Thomas said, according to ASAP Sports. "All of us go through little spurts. It's just for him, this has just been a tough one. I mean, he's going to be fine."
Spieth apologized for not giving his partner any momentum, which reminded Thomas of a previous instance when the two were on opposite ends of such a scoring difference.
"I remember I said that to him walking off 18 at Augusta in 2018 when he was, what, 9-under coming up 18. I four-putted 16, I bogeyed 17, and I was just really trying to stay out of the way because I wanted him to birdie 18 and have a chance to shoot 10-under," Thomas admitted. "I felt terrible, I kind of scraped it up the hole and he missed an 8-footer and I told him, I'm sorry man, I kind of screwed that up for you. But I guess that's just us trying to take the blame off the other one."
Thomas' jumped 22 spots on the leaderboard with his strong play, while Spieth fell 18 positions to sit tied for last among players to make the cut.
