Detroit Golf Club workers threaten strike ahead of Rocket Mortgage Classic

Workers preparing Detroit Golf Club for the inaugural Rocket Mortgage Classic are threatening to strike if a new contract isn't agreed upon before the event begins Thursday, according to the Detroit Free Press' Greg Levinsky.

"Come (Thursday) when this tournament starts, we're going to do what we need to do," said Kevin Moore, president of the Teamsters Local 299 union, which represents the workers. "Demonstrations, strikes, whatever is at our disposal."

The seven-member group represented by the union includes mechanics and groundskeepers. Their contract expired in 2018 and they've since been negotiating with Detroit Golf Club for a three-percent raise.

Moore said no representatives from either title sponsor Rocket Mortgage or the PGA Tour have reached out to him, and he's unsure if the potential strike is even on their radar, according to Levinsky.

In addition to the seven full-time workers, there are 40 temporary workers at the club who are not represented by the union.

It is unknown how the grounds crew would function should the seven union workers strike when the tournament begins.
