Tiger, GolfTV to launch series of head-to-head matches
Tiger's showdown with Phil Mickelson will not be a one-off event, as GolfTV is set to launch a series of head-to-head matches featuring Woods, according to Golf Digest's Joel Beall.
GolfTV, the online streaming service Discovery launched in 2018, announced a multi-year partnership with Tiger to deliver on-demand content on and off the course.
While speaking at the CAA World Congress of Sports, Discovery president and CEO David Zaslav said the first match will take place in Tokyo with most of them taking place outside the United States.
"The Match: Tiger vs. Phil" was a catalyst behind GolfTV's latest endeavor.
"We looked at it and said '(that's) pretty interesting,'" Zaslav said. "One million people came in and wanted to watch it. Could we improve on it? What could we do? So we're going to do a number of those types of events (and) Tiger's excited about it."
It remains unknown if Mickelson will be involved in the series of matches.
How the head-to-head contests will be played also remains unknown, with Zaslav saying Tiger and GolfTV will "play around with the format."
"Should it be one-on-one? Two-on-two? Should we have two matches going on at the same time?" Zaslav said, while adding that despite the unknowns, Tiger is "all in."
No details for the planned match in Tokyo were provided.
