Report: 5th hole at Augusta being lengthened by 30 yards
Augusta National is the latest golf course making a dramatic change in order to keep up with the length of the modern game.
The prestige course is in the process of adding a tee box to the par-4 fifth that will lengthen the hole by 30 yards, according to Golf Channel's Tim Rosaforte.
"The new hole will play upwards of 485 yards in an attempt to restore the shot value that has been taken away by the distances achieved by the modern game," Rosaforte said. "Instead of 3-woods and 7-irons, the new fifth should require a driver and a 5-iron, at the very least, depending upon the conditions."
The fifth hole, which previously played at 455 yards, was already the fifth-toughest par-4 on the course at this year's Masters.
This would be the first club-enacted change at Augusta since six holes were altered 12 years ago.
