Stan Wawrinka is the latest tennis star to withdraw from the Summer Olympics after the Swiss player revealed that a back injury has forced him to pull out of the event.

Wawrinka, who becomes the fifth member of the current top-10 ranked ATP players to withdraw from the Games in Rio de Janeiro, aggravated the injury during the Rogers Cup in Toronto last month.

"I am very sad because I would like to have witnessed my third Olympic Games,” Wawrinka a statement on the Swiss tennis governing body's website, as translated by Sports Illustrated. “Unfortunately, this will not be possible now. I wish all Swiss athletes I support, of course, good luck in Rio."

The world number four becomes the latest member of the Swiss team to withdraw due to injury following Roger Federer's announcement last month that he will miss the Games and the remainder of the tennis season, in order to heal a knee injury.

Milos Raonic (No.7) and Tomas Berdych (No.8) opted to miss the event over fears of the Zika virus, while Dominic Thiem (No. 10) cited "many reasons" for his decision to skip the Olympics.
