Kevin Love's addition to the United States men's Olympic basketball team raised some eyebrows, but the Cleveland Cavaliers forward hopes to validate head coach Gregg Popovich's decision later this month in Tokyo.

"In a way, I understand (the criticism) because I came off a season where I didn't play that many games and wasn't at the top of my game," Love told reporters after Team USA's first practice, according to ESPN's Brian Windhorst. "For me to come here, I feel I have a lot to prove."

Love averaged just 12.2 points per contest, his lowest offensive output since his rookie year. Various injuries have limited the five-time All-Star to 103 appearances over the past three seasons.

The 32-year-old hasn't suited up for the Stars and Stripes since the 2012 Olympics. He withdrew from consideration for the 2014 FIBA World Cup.

As Love re-enters the fold for USA Basketball, he pledges to put forth his best effort and fill whatever role is needed.

"I'm 13 years in now, I've heard it all," Love said. "All I can do is go out there and chase the game, let everything fall into place and just bust my ass and see what I can do for this team.

"I do believe if it's on me to have to pivot in my career for a team to win, I'm more than willing to do that. I do feel like on (the Cavs) or whatever team I end up on or USA team, this is definitely something I can continue to progress in."
