Fans of three-on-three overtime were in luck Friday.
Of the 12 games played around the NHL, eight required overtime, tying the record set back Feb. 22, 2007 for most games to go past regulation on a single day.
Five of those contests were decided in the new OT format, while three required a shootout.
Here's how the games were decided, via NHL.com:
- Flyers 3, Predators 2, OT: Rookie defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere scored a power-play goal with 52 seconds remaining in overtime, his second game-winner in the extra frame over the past three games.
- Blackhawks 3, Ducks 2, OT: Artem Anisimov scored 1:53 into overtime after Chicago scored twice in the last 1:41 of regulation to tie in Anaheim.
- Canadiens 3, Devils 2, SO: Sven Andrighetto scored in the fifth round of the shootout in a game Montreal trailed 2-0.
- Blue Jackets 2, Penguins 1, OT: Cam Atkinson scored with 2:18 remaining in overtime on a goal assisted by Brandon Dubinsky, who played both hero and villain after laying a vicious cross check on Sidney Crosby earlier in the game.
- Red Wings 4, Oilers 3, OT: Niklas Kronwall scored 26 seconds into overtime for Detroit on an odd-man rush with rookie Dylan Larkin.
- Stars 3, Canucks 2, SO: Tyler Seguin scored the only goal in the shootout, after Vancouver's Henrik Sedin tied the game with 4:10 left in the third period.
- Coyotes 2, Flames 1, OT: Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored with 39.9 seconds left in overtime.
- Panthers 3, Islanders 2, SO: The teams set an NHL record by scoring on the first nine shootout attempts. Florida goalie Roberto Luongo stopped a Brock Nelson wrist shot to end the game. This goal by Aleksander Barkov stole the show.
With another 12 games Saturday, chances are a few more will require over 60 minutes to be decided.
