Flyers sign Jakub Voracek to reported 8-year, $66-million contract extension

The Philadelphia Flyers have rewarded breakout star Jakub Voracek with a staggering multi-year contract extension.

Terms were not disclosed by the club, but TSN's Frank Seravalli reports that Voracek will earn $66 million over an eight-year term for an average annual value of $8.25 million.

His salary, which puts him in the top tier of highest-grossing NHL players, is $750,000 more than St. Louis Blues sniper Vladimir Tarasenko signed for earlier this month, and just a shade under Flyers captain Claude Giroux's $8.275-million annual hit.

Voracek is coming off his best season as a professional, spearheading the Flyers offense. He finished fourth in scoring, tallying a career-best 81 points, and his 59 assists were second only to the NHL's premier set-up man, Nicklas Backstrom.

Together, Voracek and Giroux will cost more than $16.5 million against the cap when the deal kicks in in 2016-17.

He will begin earning the final $4.5 million of his four-year, $17-million deal signed in 2013 this fall, taking up a slice of the cap smaller than Vincent Lecavalier for one more season.
