Flames, Dougie Hamilton agree to reported 6-year, $34.5-million contract extension
The Calgary Flames and newly acquired defenseman Dougie Hamilton have quickly reached terms, agreeing on a reported six-year contract extension worth $34.5 million.
Hamilton, who was acquired from the Boston Bruins for one first-round and two second-round picks at last weekend's draft, completes a formidable defensive unit at a reasonable cost.
He accepts a six-year offer from the Flames worth roughly $5.75 million per season after he was believed to have turned down the same term at $5.5 million from the cap-strapped Bruins.
Dreger notes that Calgary wanted to invest eight years into Hamilton, while the stud defenseman preferred five.
As of now, Hamilton stands to be the highest-grossing Flame next season, and the final piece toward in completing a strapping back end that includes the likes of Mark Giordano, T.J. Brodie, Kris Russell, and Dennis Wideman.
Hamilton, 21, led Boston defenseman with 42 points last season and drove possession much more effectively than his veteran peers.
