Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk is resting comfortably after undergoing a successful liver transplant Tuesday.

Melnyk received a transplant from an anonymous donor, who is also resting comfortably. Surgery began at noon at Toronto General Hospital and ended around 8:05 p.m., according to the Senators.

Ottawa released a statement last week announcing Melnyk was in urgent need of a new liver. Response from fans and well-wishers was overwhelming after the announcement and a donor list of thousands was narrowed to 12 candidates by the weekend.

Melnyk released a statement Monday thanking everyone for their outpouring of support. He and his family re-iterated that message in the statement released by the Senators on Tuesday, with a special note of gratitude extended to the anonymous donor.

Any updates on Melnyk's progress will be provided by the hospital.
