The next stage of the liver donor process for Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk is underway.
The team released an update on the search for a live donor Saturday after receiving over 2,000 messages in response.
The University Health Network's Donor Assessment Team has received over 500 donor applications, and of those, 12 candidates have been chosen to proceed to screening at the Toronto General Hospital.
Dr. Gary Levy, who leads the team, still encourages anyone else willing to donate to fax their applications.
News broke of Melnyk's need for an emergency liver transplant Thursday.
