Sabres help start scholarship fund in honor of late Steve Montador

The Buffalo Sabres are doing their part in helping to honor a former player.

The team has established the Steve Montador "Dream Big" Scholarship Fund, coined after the late Montador's favorite phrase.

The fund will receive an initial $10,000 donation provided by the team, the Buffalo Sabres Foundation, the Buffalo Sabres Alumni Association, current Sabres players and former Sabres managing partner/minority owner Larry Quinn.

Montador's father Paul Montador - who will also have a large say in how the money is distributed - is honored by what the Sabres have done to get the scholarship process moving.

Steve had such an uplifting personality, always trying to help others around him and encourage them to achieve their best. This fund is the exact way Steve would want to be remembered, as a way to support people and inspire them to achieve their dreams. I am very grateful that the Sabres have gotten the ball rolling in terms of fundraising and we know this is just the beginning of a tremendous program that will honor Steve’s legacy by helping others.

Montador played two seasons with the Sabres from 2009-11. He passed away suddenly at the age of 35 in February.
