Fantasy - WireTap: 3 players to watch on the wire

Jean-Yves Ahern-USA TODAY Sports / Reuters

Every Sunday, we examine 3 players you should consider picking up from the waiver wire in your pool.

Six more weeks until the fantasy playoffs, likely three weeks until your trade deadline. Lots to think about in your fantasy hockey pool over the next month.

You probably have a good idea if you have a playoff contender by this point, but we have three players you must look at on the wire this week.

But first, a look at the top 10 in NHL scoring.

Scoring Leaders

Player Team Points
Tyler Seguin Stars 58
Patrick Kane Blackhawks 58
Jakub Voracek Flyers 58
Sidney Crosby Penguins 56
Nicklas Backstrom Capitals 54
Vladimir Tarasenko Blues 52
Evgeni Malkin Penguins 52
Claude Giroux Flyers 52
Ryan Getzlaf Ducks 52
Tyler Johnson Lightning 51

Here are three players to target on the wire entering Week 17:

Canadiens F David Desharnais: 8 G, 22 A, +12, 58 SOG

Owned in 11 percent of Yahoo leagues

Desharnais looked to be back on track offensively over the last three games, thanks in part to being reunited with forwards Max Pacioretty and Dale Weise on the Habs' top line. After being held off the scoresheet over a three-game stretch, Desharnais rebounded with one goal and five assists in his last three, including a three-assist night Saturday versus the New Jersey Devils.

Sharks F Chris Tierney: 1 G, 5 A, +2, 17 SOG

Owned in 1 percent of Yahoo leagues

Tierney was recalled from Worcester (AHL) Wednesday, and the former 2012 second-round pick may not return if he keeps producing at the same level as the last two contests. Of course he won't continue to put up two-point games every night, but after recording just two assists in his first 14 games with the club, he scored his first NHL goal and added three assists in his last two, all while playing on the fourth line. Might be worth the gamble this week with the Sharks playing four games.

Panthers F Brandon Pirri: 9 G, 2 A, +1, 67 SOG

Owned in 3 percent of Yahoo leagues

At first look, Pirri's nine goals and two assists on the season don't look good enough for him to be considered a top candidate for a wire pickup. But when you look at when he's scored most of the goals, he becomes an interesting case for sure. The former second-round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2009 draft has been one of the hottest players in the league over the last week, scoring goals in four straight games, and six over his last seven. Pirri, who was acquired by Florida from Chicago last March for two draft picks, has also been seeing time on the point on the second power-play unit.
