Late last week Winnipeg Jets defenseman Jacob Trouba, who had been representing Team USA at the World Hockey Championships in Belarus, left the national team with an undisclosed injury for precautionary reasons. On Wednesday, Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff released a statement explaining precisely why Trouba left the tournament per Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press via Twitter:

Last week, following Team USA's game versus Latvia at the IIHF World Championships, Jacob experienced some discomfort in his neck. After consultation with Team USA medical staff, it was determined that he should return to Winnipeg a precaution due to his previous injury history.

Jacob flew to Winnipeg this past weekend and met with team doctors for a series of tests which revealed he had a sustained a mild neck strain. This will not affect Jacob's off-season training or preparation for next season's training camp in any way.

Trouba sustained a neck injury in mid-October of his rookie season when he fell awkwardly into the end boards and had to be stretchered off of the ice. Considering Trouba's enviable skill set and his frightening history with neck injuries, it seems sensible that the Jets would play it safe with their prized young defender. As Trouba adorably said on Twitter, "this neck has to last me my whole life!"
