Ovechkin becomes 1st player ever to score 900 goals

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin ventured into previously unchartered territory in Wednesday's 6-1 win over the St. Louis Blues, becoming the first player in NHL history to join the 900-goal club.

The 40-year-old scooped up a loose puck and backhanded it into the net with Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington out of position.

Ovechkin surpassed Wayne Gretzky as the NHL's all-time leading goal-scorer with his 895th tally last season. He scored a remarkable 44 goals in 65 games, missing time with a broken leg early in the season.

His 900th goal was his third through 13 games of the 2025-26 campaign.

Ovechkin is now 10 points away from tying Joe Sakic for 10th place on the NHL's all-time list. His next goal-scoring milestone would be founding the 1,000-goal club. However, the veteran is in the final year of his contract and hasn't announced whether he'll play beyond this season.
