Islanders win NHL Draft Lottery
The New York Islanders will pick first overall after winning the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery on Monday.
The Islanders entered the lottery with a 3.5% chance of winning, the 10th-best odds.
The Utah Hockey Club won the second draw, moving up the maximum of 10 spots to fourth overall, while the San Jose Sharks, who entered the lottery with the best odds, dropped to second.
Here's the order:
Montreal's 16th pick is from the Calgary Flames as part of a 2022 trade involving Sean Monahan. Calgary would've retained the selection had it won either lottery and moved into the top 10.
Erie Otters defenseman Matthew Schaefer is widely considered the top player in this year's class. Forwards Michael Misa, James Hagens, Porter Martone, and Anton Frondell are candidates to round out the top five.
The Islanders have picked first overall four previous times. They selected John Tavares (2009), Rick DiPietro (2000), Denis Potvin (1973), and Billy Harris (1972).
It remains to be seen who will make the selection this time around for the Islanders, who are currently without a general manager following the decision to not renew Lou Lamoriello's contract.
The 2025 NHL Draft will be held June 27-28 in Los Angeles.
