Russell Okung's contract with Broncos has no guaranteed money

Russell Okung's decision to enter free agency without an agent may have backfired.

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Okung signed a one-year, $5-million contract with an option to extend to a five-year deal. The $5 million is split into a $1-million workout bonus, a $2-million base salary, and a $2-million 53-man roster bonus with none of it guaranteed.

A source told Pro Football Talk that Okung must participate in at least 90 percent of his offseason workouts in order to see a dime of his workout bonus.

After one season, the Broncos will have until the beginning of the official 2017 NFL year to decide whether they want to keep Okung.

The 28-year-old has never stayed healthy for an entire NFL season and even if he does avoid injury, he also has to perform well enough for the Broncos to guarantee him $19.5 million over the next two seasons.

After the third potential season of the deal, Okung could earn $1.5 million in roster bonuses and a base salary of $8.5 million in 2019 and $9 million in 2020.

The former Seattle Seahawks tackle could potentially earn a lot of money over his deal, but he's set himself up for a very difficult first season. He would have to have the healthiest and most effective season of his career for the Broncos to feel confident picking up his option next winter.

Okung can be cut at any time between now and the end of next season without the Broncos owing him any money.
