VIDEOS: Inspecting Peyton Manning's media hits and misses

YouTube

With Peyton Manning calling it a career we'll probably be seeing a lot more of his famous personality. He could enter the broadcast booth, or take a prominent front-office job, or start a moderately successful podcast.

The point is we'll only be viewing Manning's off-field exploits from now on, so let's take a look at the hits and misses of his long and enduring run in the media spotlight.

Hit - SNL United Way skit

Throwing footballs at children is never not funny. Enough said.

Miss - Sharing a post-Super Bowl kiss with Papa John

There's something very disconcerting about this image. Look, we all know Manning has some sort of bizarre kinship with Mr. John, after all, he only enters into business relationships with those he shares an organic, personal relationship with.

He also shares a deep bond with CEOs at Sprint, MasterCard, Gatorade, DirecTV, Nationwide, Nerf, Oreo, and Buick.

Hit - Running the 40 in record (slow) time

The camera is always on!

At the five-second mark of this video Manning takes off and by the time he finishes he's at his daughter's high school graduation, watching his little one smile with her diploma as he asks himself "What year is it?" He's not a fast runner is what we're saying.

Miss - Nationwide commercials

Listen, they can't all be winners. While these commercials are only mildly annoying upon first viewing, they begin to fester when you begin involuntarily singing the jingles aloud at your desk.

Hit - SNL dancing skit

While the entire skit could be characterized as a miss due to its one-joke premise, watching Manning dance like every white guy at a wedding is hypnotic and enjoyable.

Miss - Interview with Ron Burgundy

Remember when Ron Burgundy hosted SportsCenter? No? Because you missed it or because you scrubbed it from your memory in an attempt to revive your sense of humor? We get it Will, it's fake irony. Go put on another wacky costume in an unwatchable Adam McKay comedy.

Still, you can't fault Manning for this one, as he's a good enough sport to play along and try to keep things afloat. He's at least as good an actor as Ferrell.

Hit - Talking to Eli's cardboard cutout

Addressing his brother Eli's notoriously sad face on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" is classic Peyton. Self deprecating and self aware, Peyton is the rare athlete who is at home in the spotlight while being himself.
