Report: Cardinals interested in signing Chris Cooley

Geoff Burke / US PRESSWIRE

The Arizona Cardinals have reached out to former NFL tight end Chris Cooley in hopes of signing him, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

Cooley, 33, retired (though he never filed the official paperwork) after the 2012 season, transitioning from the Washington Redskins' active roster to a role as a radio broadcaster for the team.

In his last season with the Redskins, Cooley appeared in nine games and caught just one pass. He made 429 grabs for 4,711 yards and 33 touchdowns in his nine-year career.

In recent weeks, Cooley has hinted at interest in returning to the field.

"I feel (bleeping) awesome," Cooley told Dan Steinberg of The Washington Post after a recent workout.

The Cardinals are desperate for veteran depth at tight end after the abrupt retirement of John Carlson in May. Troy Niklas, Ted Bolser, and Darren Fells sit atop the depth chart currently. That probably won't be good enough for a team that fancies itself as a Super Bowl contender.
