Jaguars' James Sample undergoes surgery for broken arm

Jamie Rhodes-USA TODAY Sports

The Jacksonville Jaguars lost yet another rookie defender to injury during offseason workouts Friday, as fourth-round safety James Sample underwent surgery for a broken arm.

Sample suffered the injury in Jacksonville's OTA practice Thursday, but he's reportedly expected to make his return at some point during training camp this summer.

The safety's injury only continues an unfortunate start to the year for the Jaguars' rookie class, as first-round pass rusher Dante Fowler Jr. had his debut season brought to an end during his first minicamp practice with a torn ACL.

Sample's recovery time is, of course, far less extensive than that of Fowler's, but he still stands to miss some valuable practice reps until he's able to get back on the field.

If he can indeed return in time for preseason action, Sample should have an opportunity to compete with Sergio Brown for the starting free safety role.
