Titans don't plan to trade Zach Mettenberger after drafting Marcus Mariota
The Tennessee Titans spoke very highly of quarterback Zach Mettenberger during his rookie season, leading many to believe the team would make its No. 2 overall selection in the draft available via trade.
Instead, the Titans selected quarterback Marcus Mariota out of Oregon in a move that figures to send Mettenberger to the bench.
Even so, the Titans don't believe the move will leave Mettenberger wanting to get out of town. Titans general manager Ruston Webster denied reports that Mettenberger has requested a trade.
"We talked to Zach, and that's not Zach in any way," Webster told reporters. "I think he'll embrace the situation here and he won't be traded."
Titans head coach Ken Whisenhunt echoed Webster's comments.
"The way this league is going on, very seldom do you get a quarterback that goes through the whole season," Whisenhunt said. "So Zach will get an opportunity at some point. When he does, he's got to be ready to take advantage of that.
"He'll get a lot of work in preseason. He'll get some work with the (first team) and he'll get prepared."
Mettenberger's agent, Joe Linta, told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport that his client doesn't want to be traded - he just wants to compete with Mariota for the starting job.
