Panthers get defensive, add LB Shaq Thompson
Follow the action with our NFL Draft Tracker, which includes all seven rounds, scouting profiles, trades and rumors.
The Carolina Panthers have selected linebacker Shaq Thompson out of Washington with the 25th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.
An outstanding athlete, Thompson will probably be used as a weakside linebacker in the Panthers defense, although he could also make the move to safety.
Calling him a versatile athlete is an understatement when considering Thompson also played running back in college and will be able to contribute on special teams should the Panthers need him to.
Adding Thompson to an already strong linebacking corps, with All-Pro Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis, will give the Panthers one of the strongest mid-level defenses in the league.

Strengths
- Best suited for an outside linebacker role in a 4-3 front, where his sure tackling and complete skill set can be used to contribute in all areas of the defensive game.
- Won't be a physically dominant player against the run, but has the instincts to find the ball and athletic ability to finish the play.
- Possesses the skill set to be considered a top safety prospect by many, making him an even more impressive athlete for the linebacker position.
- Would likely step in as a top contributor on all special teams coverage units early on in his career.
Weaknesses
- Doesn't yet have the size to be an imposing presence against the run, so will likely need to be kept free to best utilize his play-making ability.
- Has a tendency to stay blocked when opposing offensive lineman make contact, not demonstrating an ability to disengage and make a play on the ball.
- Talent will see him earn a contributing role somewhere on a defense regardless of scheme, but the lack of distinct position fit could make for somewhat of a transition process.
