Report: Cowboys declining Lance's 5th-year option
The Dallas Cowboys are declining the fifth-year option for quarterback Trey Lance, a source told ESPN's Todd Archer.
Dallas will avoid paying Lance $22.4 million for the 2025 season, which would've been fully guaranteed.
Lance was selected third overall by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2021 NFL Draft. He passed for 797 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions in eight games and four starts with the Niners.
Dallas acquired Lance in exchange for a fourth-round pick in August 2023.
The Cowboys admired the progress that Lance made in practices last season despite him being inactive for every game of the 2023 season. The soon-to-be 24-year-old is expected to get extensive playing time during the upcoming preseason.
"We think Lance is a good addition looking ahead," owner and general manager Jerry Jones said last week. "I've got him right here in this draft as if he was a draft pick for us."
No Cowboys quarterback is currently signed beyond 2024. Dak Prescott is set to become a free agent in 2025. Prescott recently said that extension discussions haven't begun.
Cooper Rush, who's set to compete with Lance to back up Prescott, is also slated to become a free agent after next season.
